Fasted Privacy Policy

Effective date: 9 October 2026

Draft for review: This policy describes the planned Fasted v1 application, not a verified released build. Confirm that it matches the implementation, resolve the iCloud storage review, and complete the marked publication items before publishing. These editorial notes are not part of the final public policy.

Fasted is a fasting timer and personal fasting journal developed by David White, trading as White Matter ("we", "us", or "our").

This policy explains what information Fasted handles, why it is used, where it is stored, and the choices available to you. It covers the Fasted iPhone application and its Apple Watch companion.

1. Summary

Fasted is designed to keep your fasting records within your Apple devices and Apple services, except when you choose to export or share information yourself.

  • Fasted is free and does not contain advertising, paid subscriptions, or in-app purchases.
  • We do not sell, rent, or use your fasting information, feelings, or notes for advertising or marketing.
  • Fasted does not require an account with us and does not include a third-party analytics or tracking SDK.
  • Your records are saved locally. Optional iCloud synchronisation uses your private CloudKit database, and relevant information can be transferred between your paired iPhone and Apple Watch.

Fasted does not read from or write to Apple Health or HealthKit. It does not use Apple Intelligence or third-party artificial-intelligence services to analyse your records or notes.

We do not operate a server that receives your fasting history through normal use of the app. We may receive information you deliberately send when contacting support, and Apple may provide diagnostic reports as described below.

2. Information handled by Fasted

Preferences

Fasted stores preferences such as your selected fasting preset, custom target duration, reminder settings, appearance preferences, and synchronisation choices.

These settings are stored locally. Relevant preferences may also be synchronised through iCloud or transferred to your paired Apple Watch. Device-specific permissions remain controlled by the relevant device.

Fasting records

Fasted processes information you enter or generate while using the app, including:

  • Active and previous fasts, including manually added records
  • Start and end dates and times, fasting targets, and selected presets
  • Actual durations and whether a selected target was reached
  • Optional feelings and plain-text notes
  • Record creation and modification times, time-zone information, and whether a record originated on iPhone, Apple Watch, or through manual entry

This information is used to operate the timer, display progress, maintain your history, calculate basic summaries, provide reminders, and keep supported devices consistent.

Feelings and notes

After a fast, you may record an overall feeling and a note about your experience. Both are optional and can be added, changed, or removed later. You can use the timer without providing either.

Notes may contain sensitive information, depending on what you write. Only include information you are comfortable storing on your devices and, when enabled, synchronising through iCloud.

Feelings and notes are used as part of your personal journal. Fasted does not use them for advertising, automated health assessments, or AI processing.

Synchronisation information

Fasted maintains technical information such as record identifiers, app-installation identifiers, record versions, pending changes, and deletion markers.

This information helps associate changes with the correct record, avoid duplicates, reconcile offline updates, and prevent deleted records from being restored by an older device. These identifiers are not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Support correspondence

If you contact us, we receive the contact details, messages, attachments, screenshots, or exported records you choose to send. We use them to respond to your request and investigate relevant problems.

Contacting support does not automatically give us access to your fasting history or private iCloud database. Please avoid sending sensitive notes or unrelated personal information unless needed for your request.

3. Apple Watch and device synchronisation

Fasted uses Apple's WatchConnectivity framework to transfer relevant information between your paired iPhone and Apple Watch.

Transferred information includes the active fasting session, its target and timestamps, recent records, feelings, relevant preferences, and technical information needed to apply changes and deletions correctly. Recent records may include associated notes, even though full note editing is available only on iPhone.

Both devices keep local information so the timer can work when the other device is unavailable. Changes made while disconnected are retained locally and transferred when connectivity permits.

The iPhone coordinates iCloud synchronisation. Paired iPhone–Watch synchronisation is separate from iCloud synchronisation and can continue when app-level iCloud synchronisation is disabled.

These transfers do not pass through a server operated by us.

4. iCloud and CloudKit

Publication item: The following describes the requested iCloud design. Publish it only after the iCloud release gate in the Fasted specification has been resolved and the actual cloud payload has been verified. Amend this section if the released storage design differs.

When you enable iCloud synchronisation, Fasted uses Apple's CloudKit service to synchronise information through the private iCloud database associated with your Apple Account.

Synchronised information includes fasting records and their targets, dates and times, optional feelings and notes, relevant preferences, and the technical information required to reconcile changes and deletions.

This information is used to provide Fasted's features, maintain records across supported installations, and restore information that has successfully synchronised. It is not published to other Fasted users or used by us for advertising, marketing, or behavioural profiling.

We do not use a separate Fasted account system to associate these records with your name or email address.

You can use Fasted without enabling iCloud synchronisation. Disabling it stops new app-level cloud transfers but does not automatically delete information already stored in iCloud or change your device-backup settings.

CloudKit is operated by Apple. Its storage, security, processing locations, and backup practices are governed by Apple's applicable terms, privacy information, and your Apple Account settings. Apple's services may involve processing information outside your country of residence.

See Apple's Privacy Policy for information about Apple's data practices.

5. Notifications

Fasted can send an optional local notification when your selected fasting target is reached.

Notifications are scheduled through Apple's notification system. We do not operate a notification server or send advertising notifications.

Reminder content does not include your feelings or notes. A visible notification may nevertheless reveal that you are using a fasting timer. You can control notification permissions and previews through your device settings.

Refusing or disabling notifications does not prevent you from using the timer or reviewing previous fasts.

6. Purchases

Fasted is free and does not offer subscriptions or in-app purchases.

We do not collect payment-card information or billing details through Fasted. Apple handles your App Store account and app-download activity under its own terms and privacy policy.

7. Diagnostics

Fasted does not include a third-party analytics or tracking SDK.

If you have chosen to share analytics with Apple and app developers, Apple may make crash or performance reports available to us. These may contain technical information about the app, operating system, device, and fault.

We use diagnostic information to investigate problems and improve reliability, not for advertising or behavioural profiling. Fasted does not deliberately include fasting notes or feeling values in diagnostic logs.

You can change your analytics-sharing choices in your device's privacy settings.

8. Sharing and service providers

We do not sell your personal information or share fasting records with advertisers or data brokers.

Apple may process information when you use iCloud and CloudKit, Apple Watch connectivity, system notifications, the App Store, or optional Apple-provided diagnostics. Apple handles information under its applicable terms and privacy commitments.

If you contact us, the email or support service providers we use may process your correspondence on our behalf. They do not receive your fasting history automatically.

When you export and share records, the destination and recipient are chosen by you. Information sent to another app, service, or person is then subject to that recipient's handling practices.

We may disclose information we hold if legally required, or where lawfully necessary to protect users, our rights, or the security of the app. We do not ordinarily hold a separate server-side copy of your fasting journal, although we may hold information you have sent to support.

Publication item: Confirm the service providers used for support and diagnostics. Where White Matter makes international transfers, add the applicable transfer arrangements, safeguards, and how users can obtain further information. Do not assume that linking to Apple's policy covers transfers made through other providers.

9. Retention and deletion

Local information

Fasting records and notes remain in local storage until you delete them or remove the relevant app data. The Watch may keep a smaller recent-history cache, while retaining unsynchronised changes until they can be transferred.

Deleting the app from one device does not automatically delete copies on another device, records in iCloud, exports, or device backups. Offloading an app is different from deleting its data.

iCloud information

Synchronised information remains in your private iCloud database while you retain it.

Deleting a fast within Fasted removes it locally and queues deletion from the connected Watch and iCloud, where applicable. The Delete all data control requests removal of your Fasted records across those locations.

Remote deletion requires connectivity and may not happen immediately. Fasted displays a pending status until the relevant deletion is acknowledged. Turning off synchronisation is not the same as requesting deletion.

Minimal identifiers and deletion metadata may be retained for as long as needed to prevent an older offline device from restoring deleted records. These markers do not retain fasting intervals, feelings, or note contents.

Apple-managed backups or recovery systems may retain copies according to Apple's applicable settings and retention practices. App-level synchronisation controls do not independently manage those backups.

Exported information

Exporting creates a separate copy in the location you select. Deleting a record or clearing Fasted does not remove exported files or copies you have shared. You control their retention and deletion separately.

Diagnostics and support correspondence

Information we receive for diagnostics or support is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary to investigate problems, respond to requests, maintain relevant support records, resolve disputes, or comply with legal obligations.

Apple determines retention within its own diagnostic services under its applicable policies.

10. Controlling your information

You can change your choices and manage records at any time:

  • iCloud: Change Fasted's synchronisation setting or its iCloud access in your Apple Account settings. Existing cloud records are not automatically deleted when access is disabled.
  • Notifications and diagnostics: Change notification permissions, previews, and analytics-sharing choices in your device settings.
  • Feelings, notes, and individual records: Use Fasted's history and editing controls to change or remove information.
  • Export: Use Fasted's export control to create a JSON copy of your records and preferences.
  • Delete all data: Use the in-app deletion control and allow connected devices and iCloud to receive the deletion before removing the app.

Removing the Watch app stops its future use on that device but does not itself erase the iPhone's history. Device backups and exported files must be managed separately.

Where processing is based on consent, withdrawing it does not affect the lawfulness of processing that occurred before withdrawal.

11. Legal bases and your privacy rights

Legal bases

Complete before publication: The supplied Volumes policy and Fasted specification do not establish White Matter's lawful bases. State the applicable basis for each processing purpose for which White Matter is responsible, including app-data processing where applicable, support correspondence, diagnostics, and legal obligations. Where processing involves special-category health information, identify the additional applicable condition. Do not describe starting a fast, entering a note, or enabling an Apple permission as explicit consent without an appropriate consent mechanism.

Your rights

Depending on where you live and the applicable legal basis, you may have rights to be informed about the use of your personal information, access or obtain a copy, correct inaccurate information, request deletion, restrict processing, receive portable information, and withdraw consent.

Right to object: Where applicable, you may object to processing based on legitimate interests. Contact us using the details below to exercise this right or ask about your other rights.

Most fasting information is held on your devices or in your private iCloud database. Because we do not provide a Fasted account or hold a central fasting-record database, we may not be able to identify or retrieve those records ourselves. We will provide reasonable assistance with the available controls and respond to requests concerning information we do hold, such as support correspondence.

UK users may raise a concern with the Information Commissioner's Office. Users elsewhere may contact their local data-protection authority.

12. Security

Fasted relies on Apple platform protections, app sandboxing, device security, and private CloudKit storage to help protect information.

We do not make an unconditional claim that every Fasted record, backup, or export is end-to-end encrypted. The protections available depend on the storage location, data type, and relevant device and account settings.

No storage or transmission system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Protect your devices and Apple Account with appropriate passcodes, secure credentials, and account-security features. Take care when sharing exported records or screenshots.

13. Children

Fasted is intended for adults and is not directed to children. It is a personal timer and journal, not a medical service or a fasting programme for children.

We do not operate a registration system that collects children's profiles. If you believe a child has sent personal information directly to us, please contact us so we can review and address the situation.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when Fasted's features, data practices, or legal obligations change.

The revised policy will display a new effective date and will be made available through the app and its public privacy-policy page. Where required, we will provide additional notice or request permission before introducing materially different processing.
