Therma Privacy Policy

Effective date: 9 October 2026

Therma is a timer and personal session-logging application for sauna, steam-room and cold-water activities, developed by David White, trading as White Matter ("we", "us", or "our").

This policy explains what information Therma handles, why it is used, where it is stored, and the choices available to you. It covers the Therma iPhone and Apple Watch apps and their Live Activity features.

1. Summary

Therma is designed to keep your session information within your Apple devices and your private iCloud storage.

  • Therma does not require you to create an account with us.
  • Therma does not contain third-party advertising or tracking, and we do not sell or rent your personal information.
  • Session information is stored locally and can be synchronised through your private iCloud database and between your paired iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • We do not operate a server that receives your session history, temperatures, notes or feelings as part of normal app use.
  • Live Activities and notifications can show session information outside the app. You can control these features separately from recording your sessions.

If you contact us for support, we receive the information you choose to send. Apple may also provide diagnostic information according to your device's analytics-sharing settings. These are explained below.

2. Information handled by Therma

Session information

Therma processes information you enter or generate while using the app, including:

  • Activity type, such as sauna, infrared sauna, steam room or cold plunge.
  • Clock type, such as a countdown or an elapsed-time stopwatch, and any selected target duration.
  • Session dates, start and end times, actual duration and session status.
  • The room or water temperature you choose to record.
  • Optional session notes and your selected feeling after a session.
  • Manually added sessions and corrections to existing records.

This information is used to provide timers, session history, descriptive statistics, reminders, Live Activities, Apple Watch functionality and synchronisation.

A recorded temperature is a value you enter, not a measurement of body temperature or a continuous sensor reading. Notes, feelings and temperature entries are optional. Notes and feelings may contain sensitive information depending on what you choose to record.

Preferences and favourites

Therma stores settings such as your preferred temperature unit, clock and duration preferences, last-used session settings, saved favourites, appearance preferences and alert settings.

Settings needed only on one device, such as whether to show a Live Activity on that iPhone, are stored locally. Relevant shared preferences and favourites may be synchronised through iCloud or transferred to your paired Apple Watch.

Technical information used for synchronisation

Therma uses internal session and record identifiers, app-generated device identifiers, timestamps and synchronisation status to associate changes with the correct records and avoid duplicate or outdated entries.

These identifiers support app functionality. They are not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites or to create advertising profiles.

Information outside Therma's current features

Therma does not access Apple Health or HealthKit, read heart-rate data, request body measurements, or request access to your location or contacts. It does not use Apple Intelligence or send session information to an artificial-intelligence provider.

3. Apple Watch and paired-device synchronisation

Therma transfers relevant session information, favourites and settings between your paired iPhone and Apple Watch using Apple's device-connectivity services.

This allows you to start or end a session on either device, see the active session, and access recent history. Transfers can include session timing, activity type, recorded temperature and other information needed to keep the session record consistent.

When your iPhone is unavailable, Therma can save sessions locally on Apple Watch and transfer them later. In the current design, Watch-created session information reaches iCloud through the paired iPhone rather than through a separate Watch-to-iCloud connection.

A record saved on one device may remain only on that device until communication and synchronisation are available. Paired-device transfers are not routed through a session-data server operated by us.

4. iCloud and CloudKit

Therma uses Apple's CloudKit service to synchronise app records through the private iCloud database associated with your Apple Account.

Synchronised information may include session history and associated activity, timing, temperature, notes and feelings, together with saved favourites, relevant shared preferences and supporting synchronisation information.

This information is used to provide Therma's features, keep records consistent across your devices, and restore information that has previously reached iCloud. Therma does not publish your private session records to a public database or share them with other Therma users.

We do not use this information for advertising, marketing or behavioural profiling. We do not operate a separate Therma account system that associates your private session database with your name or email address.

CloudKit is operated by Apple. Its storage, security, processing locations and backup practices are governed by Apple's applicable terms, privacy information and your Apple Account settings. Apple's services may process information outside your country of residence. See Apple's privacy information for more information.

Therma's core timer and local logging can work without iCloud. Without synchronisation, records may remain available only on the device where they are stored. Turning off iCloud access does not, by itself, delete information already stored in iCloud.

5. Notifications and Live Activities

Session reminders

With your permission, Therma uses local notifications to remind you when a selected countdown duration has been reached. These reminders are scheduled through your device's notification system rather than a reminder server operated by us.

Notifications may reveal that you have an active Therma session or that a session target has been reached. You can change notification permissions and preview settings through your device's Settings. Disabling notifications does not prevent ordinary session timing or logging.

Live Activities

When enabled, Therma can show the active session's activity type, elapsed or remaining time, clock label, session status and optional recorded temperature in a Live Activity.

Depending on your devices and settings, this information can appear on the Lock Screen, in the Dynamic Island, in StandBy, in the Apple Watch Smart Stack, or in other supported Apple system views.

Information shown in a Live Activity or notification may be visible to someone who can see your screen, including while the device is locked.

Therma does not include session notes, feelings or your full session history in its Live Activity content. The Live Activity uses a limited snapshot of the active session, including the timing information and internal session identifier needed to display it and open the matching session.

Therma's current Live Activities are updated through the app and Apple's system frameworks. We do not operate a remote Live Activity update server or collect Live Activity push tokens for this feature.

You can turn off Show Live Activity in Therma's settings and review the relevant controls in your device's Settings. Removing or disabling a Live Activity hides the presentation; it does not end the session or delete its record.

6. Support correspondence

If you contact us, we receive the contact details, message content and any attachments you choose to send. This may include your email address, screenshots, device information or information about a problem you encountered.

We use this information to respond to your request, investigate problems, assist with privacy requests and maintain relevant support records. Please avoid sending session notes or other sensitive information unless it is necessary to explain your request.

Support correspondence is separate from Therma's private session storage. Sending us a screenshot or session details makes that information available to us even though ordinary app use does not send your session history to a server we operate.

7. Diagnostics

Therma does not include a third-party analytics or tracking SDK.

If you have chosen to share analytics with Apple and app developers, Apple may provide us with crash or performance reports and relevant app-usage statistics under its analytics-sharing arrangements.

We use diagnostic information to investigate faults and improve the app. We do not use it for advertising or to build profiles of your heat or cold sessions. Therma does not intentionally include session notes, feelings or recorded temperatures in diagnostic logging.

You can review Apple's analytics-sharing controls in your device's privacy settings. Further information is available in Apple's App Analytics and Privacy information.

8. Sharing and service providers

We do not sell or rent your personal information or share your session information with advertisers or data brokers.

Apple processes information when you use Apple-provided services, including iCloud and CloudKit, paired Apple Watch connectivity, system notifications, Live Activities, the App Store and Apple-provided diagnostics. Apple's own handling of information is described in its applicable terms and privacy information.

Our email service provider also processes support correspondence so that we can receive, store and respond to messages. Providers acting on our behalf must process information for the relevant service and provide appropriate protections under applicable data-protection law.

We may disclose information we actually hold if required by law or where necessary and lawful to protect users, our rights or the security of our services. This may include support correspondence or relevant diagnostic information. We do not ordinarily hold a separate server-side copy of your Therma session history that we could retrieve or disclose.

9. Retention and deletion

Local information

Local records remain on a device until you delete them through the app or remove the app's stored data. Removing Therma from one device does not necessarily remove copies held on another device or in backups.

Deleting the app is not the same as deleting your iCloud data. Information that has already reached iCloud may be restored when you reinstall the app and reconnect to the same account.

iCloud and paired-device information

Information synchronised through CloudKit remains in your private iCloud database until it is deleted.

When you delete a supported session or favourite within Therma, the deletion is queued for synchronisation. Copies on a disconnected device may remain until that device reconnects and processes the change.

Technical deletion and synchronisation records may be retained for as long as needed to propagate the deletion and prevent an outdated offline copy from restoring a deleted record. These records are not displayed as ordinary session history.

You can also review the iCloud storage-management controls Apple makes available for Therma. Disabling synchronisation alone does not remove existing cloud records, local copies or backups.

Backups and recovery copies

Copies may remain in Apple-managed or user-created backups and recovery systems according to the relevant retention practices. Removing an active record does not necessarily remove every backup copy immediately.

Support correspondence and diagnostics

We retain support correspondence for as long as reasonably necessary to answer your request, maintain relevant support records, resolve disputes or meet legal obligations.

Any diagnostic reports we retain are kept for as long as reasonably necessary to investigate the issue and assess or maintain a fix. Apple separately determines the retention of reports and records within its own services.

10. Controlling your information

You can change how Therma handles or displays your information:

  • Individual records: Use Therma's editing and deletion controls for sessions and favourites.
  • iCloud: Review Therma's access and stored data in your Apple Account's iCloud settings. Turning access off and deleting stored data are separate actions.
  • Notifications: Change Therma's notification permissions and preview settings through your device's Settings.
  • Live Activities: Turn off Show Live Activity in Therma, and review relevant device-level display controls.
  • Diagnostics: Review Analytics & Improvements, including Share With App Developers, in your device's privacy settings.
  • Information sent to us: Contact us about support correspondence or other personal information we hold.

Menu names and available controls can vary between system versions and devices.

Changing a permission normally affects future use of that feature. It does not automatically delete information already stored on your devices, in iCloud, in backups or in support correspondence. Where processing relies on consent, withdrawing it does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.

11. Legal basis and international transfers

Complete before publication: The supplied materials do not establish the lawful bases for Therma's processing or all provider and international-transfer arrangements. Insert the confirmed purposes and applicable lawful basis for each relevant activity: session storage and synchronisation, optional notes and feelings, support correspondence, diagnostics, and any processing required by law. Where legitimate interests are relied on, identify those interests. Where consent is relied on, explain how it is obtained and withdrawn. If processing includes special-category health information, identify the applicable additional condition and any necessary consent mechanism. Confirm the relevant controller and processor roles, recipients, any international transfers for which White Matter is responsible, the safeguards used and how users can obtain information about those safeguards. Do not treat an Apple system permission or acceptance of this policy as automatically establishing valid legal consent.

12. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live and the circumstances of the processing, you may have rights to be informed about the use of your information, access or obtain a copy, correct inaccuracies, request deletion, restrict processing, receive portable information, and withdraw consent where it is relied on.

You may also have the right to object to processing, including processing based on legitimate interests.

Most session information handled by Therma is held directly on your devices or in your private iCloud database. Because we do not provide a Therma user account or hold a central session database, we may not be able to identify or retrieve those records ourselves. We will nevertheless provide reasonable assistance when you contact us.

For information we do hold, such as support correspondence, contact us using the details below. We may need reasonable information to verify your request, but you should not send your Apple Account password or device passcode.

UK users may raise a concern with the Information Commissioner's Office. Users elsewhere may contact their local data-protection authority. You do not have to contact us first before raising a concern with a regulator.

13. Security

Therma relies on Apple platform security, app sandboxing, device security and private CloudKit storage to help protect your information.

Apple describes its protections for cloud data in its iCloud data security overview. The protections that apply depend on the type of information, the service and the applicable account settings; this policy does not promise that every Therma record has the same level of encryption protection.

No storage or transmission system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Protect your devices and Apple Account with appropriate security settings, and consider what information you allow to appear on locked or shared screens.

14. Children

Therma is a general wellness application and is not designed specifically for children. It does not provide a separate child-account service.

If you believe a child has sent personal information to us, for example in a support message, please contact us so that we can review and address it.

15. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when Therma's features, data practices or legal obligations change. The revised policy will display an updated effective date and will be made available through the app and its public privacy-policy page.

Where a change requires additional notice or a new choice from you, we will provide that notice or request before the relevant processing begins.
