Volumes Privacy Policy

Effective date: 20 August 2026

Volumes is a fitness and workout-tracking application developed by David White, trading as White Matter (“Volumes”, “we”, “us”, or “our”).

This policy explains what information Volumes handles, why it is used, where it is stored, and the choices available to you.

1. Summary

Volumes is designed to keep your information within your Apple devices and Apple services.

  • Volumes does not contain third-party advertising or tracking.
  • We do not sell, rent, or use your health and fitness information for advertising or marketing.
  • Volumes does not require you to create an account with us.
  • Certain data can be synchronised between your Apple devices using your private iCloud database.
  • Apple Health access is optional and controlled by you.
  • Apple Intelligence features use Apple’s on-device Foundation Models framework.
  • We do not operate a server that receives your workout, body-measurement, HealthKit, or Apple Intelligence prompt data.

2. Information handled by Volumes

Profile and preferences

You may provide information such as:

  • Body weight and height
  • Preferred measurement units
  • Workout and rest-timer preferences
  • Appearance and accessibility preferences
  • Apple Watch and Apple Intelligence feature settings

These settings are stored locally on your device. Relevant settings and active-workout information may also be transferred directly between your paired iPhone and Apple Watch.

Workout information

Volumes processes information that you enter or generate while using the app, including:

  • Workout routines and folders
  • Custom exercises
  • Completed and active workouts
  • Exercise names and equipment
  • Sets, repetitions, weights, distances, durations, and rest periods
  • Workout dates, times, volume, and estimated energy
  • Exercise and workout notes
  • Post-workout reflections
  • Generated summaries, tags, and progressive-overload recommendations

This information is used to provide workout logging, history, statistics, recommendations, widgets, Live Activities, Apple Watch functionality, and related app features.

Body measurements

You may record:

  • Body weight
  • Body-fat percentage
  • Height
  • Shoulder, chest, arm, forearm, waist, hip, thigh, and calf measurements
  • The date associated with each measurement

Standalone weight and body-fat records are stored locally by Volumes. If Apple Health access is enabled, weight and body-fat records may also be read from or written to Apple Health.

Circumference measurements are stored in your private iCloud database so they can remain available across your devices.

A bodyweight value may also form part of a completed workout when it is required to calculate the load of a bodyweight exercise.

3. Apple Health and HealthKit

Connecting Volumes to Apple Health is optional.

Depending on the features you use, Volumes may request permission to access:

  • Workouts
  • Body mass
  • Body-fat percentage
  • Height
  • Heart rate
  • Active energy
  • Basal energy

Volumes uses this information to:

  • Prefill body weight and height during setup
  • Import recent weight and body-fat measurements
  • Calculate bodyweight exercise loads and workout estimates
  • Display workout statistics such as average heart rate and active energy
  • Record completed strength-training workouts in Apple Health

With your permission, Volumes may write completed workouts, estimated active energy, body weight, and body-fat measurements to Apple Health.

Apple Health permissions are granted separately for each category. You may refuse or revoke any permission without losing access to unrelated app functionality.

Raw heart-rate, active-energy, and basal-energy samples read from Apple Health are not uploaded to a server operated by us and are not copied into CloudKit. Standalone weight and body-fat samples imported from Apple Health remain in Volumes’ local storage.

Health and fitness information obtained through HealthKit is never:

  • Sold or rented
  • Used for advertising or marketing
  • Used for advertising-related profiling
  • Shared with data brokers
  • Used for unrelated data mining

Information stored in Apple Health is controlled by Apple and remains subject to Apple’s privacy and security protections.

4. iCloud and CloudKit

Volumes uses Apple’s CloudKit service to synchronise certain information through the private iCloud database associated with your Apple Account.

Information synchronised through CloudKit may include:

  • Completed workout history and exercise details
  • Workout routines and folders
  • Custom exercises
  • Circumference measurements
  • Workout notes and post-workout reflections
  • Apple Intelligence-generated summaries and reflection tags
  • Bodyweight values included in completed bodyweight workouts

This information is used only to provide Volumes’ features and synchronisation between your devices.

We do not use CloudKit data for advertising, marketing, or behavioural profiling. We do not use a separate account system to associate this data with your name or email address.

CloudKit is operated by Apple. Its storage, security, processing locations, and backup practices are governed by your Apple Account settings and Apple’s applicable terms and privacy policy.

5. Apple Intelligence processing

Volumes uses Apple’s Foundation Models framework for optional features such as:

  • Workout summaries
  • Post-workout reflection tags
  • Progressive-overload explanations and recommendations

These features may process workout details, workout history, exercise performance, and text that you enter in a post-workout reflection.

The current implementation performs this processing using the Apple Intelligence model available on your device. Volumes does not send prompts or generated responses to us, an advertising service, or a third-party artificial-intelligence provider.

Generated summaries, tags, and reflections may be saved as part of your completed workout. When iCloud synchronisation is active, those saved results may be synchronised through your private CloudKit database.

You can disable the relevant Apple Intelligence features in Volumes’ settings. Generated content is provided for general fitness information and is not medical advice or an automated decision carrying legal or similarly significant effects.

6. Purchases

Volumes may use Apple’s StoreKit service to offer and restore purchases.

Apple processes payment information and purchase transactions. We do not receive your payment-card details. Volumes receives only the information needed to determine whether a valid Volumes entitlement is associated with your App Store account.

Purchase records are retained by Apple according to Apple’s policies and applicable law.

7. Diagnostics

Volumes does not include a third-party analytics or tracking SDK.

If you have chosen to share device analytics with Apple and app developers, Apple may provide us with crash or performance reports. We use such information only to diagnose faults and improve the app. We do not use diagnostic information for advertising.

8. Sharing and service providers

We do not sell your personal information.

Information may be processed by Apple when you use Apple-provided services, including:

  • iCloud and CloudKit
  • Apple Health and HealthKit
  • Apple Intelligence
  • StoreKit and the App Store
  • Apple Watch connectivity, widgets, and Live Activities
  • Apple-provided crash diagnostics, if enabled

Apple handles information under its own terms and privacy commitments. Any service provider acting on our behalf must provide protections consistent with this policy and applicable data-protection law.

We may disclose information if legally required to do so, or where necessary to protect users, our rights, or the security of the app. Because we do not operate a user account or workout-data server, we ordinarily do not possess a server-side copy that we could disclose.

9. Retention and deletion

Local information

Locally stored information remains on your device until you delete the relevant record, reset the device, or delete Volumes.

Deleting the app removes its local data from that device. It does not automatically delete information already stored in Apple Health or iCloud.

iCloud information

CloudKit-synchronised information remains in your private iCloud database while you continue to retain it.

Deleting a supported workout, routine, folder, or custom exercise within Volumes will cause that deletion to synchronise through CloudKit. You may also disable Volumes’ iCloud access or delete its stored iCloud data through your Apple Account’s iCloud storage settings.

Copies may remain temporarily in Apple-managed backups or recovery systems according to Apple’s retention practices.

Apple Health information

Revoking Health access prevents future reading or writing but does not automatically delete information previously written to Apple Health.

You can review permissions and delete data associated with Volumes using the Health app or your device’s Health privacy settings.

Apple Intelligence information

Temporary prompts and responses used during on-device generation are not retained by us. Generated summaries, tags, or reflection information saved with a workout are retained for as long as that workout remains stored.

Support correspondence

If you contact us, we may retain your message and contact details for as long as reasonably necessary to answer your request, maintain support records, resolve disputes, or comply with legal obligations.

10. Withdrawing consent and controlling your information

You can withdraw or change your choices at any time:

  • Apple Health: Open the Health app, select your profile, choose Apps or Devices, and select Volumes.
  • iCloud: Open Settings, select your Apple Account, choose iCloud, and change Volumes’ access.
  • Apple Intelligence: Disable workout summaries or reflection analysis in Volumes’ workout settings.
  • Individual records: Use the available deletion controls within Volumes.
  • Local data: Delete Volumes from your device.
  • Apple Health records: Delete the relevant records through the Health app.

Withdrawing permission does not affect processing that occurred before permission was withdrawn.

11. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights concerning your personal information, including rights to:

  • Be informed about its use
  • Access or obtain a copy
  • Correct inaccurate information
  • Request deletion
  • Restrict or object to processing
  • Receive portable information
  • Withdraw consent

Most data handled by Volumes is held directly on your device, in Apple Health, or in your private iCloud database. Because we do not provide a Volumes account or hold a user database, we may not be able to identify or retrieve that information ourselves. We will nevertheless provide reasonable assistance and instructions if you contact us.

UK users may also raise a concern with the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. Users elsewhere may contact their local data-protection authority.

12. Security

Volumes relies on Apple platform security, app sandboxing, HealthKit authorisation, and private CloudKit storage to protect your information.

No storage or transmission system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You should protect your device and Apple Account using a passcode, secure credentials, and appropriate account-security features.

13. Children

Volumes is a general fitness application and is not directed specifically to children under 13 or the minimum age required by local law. We do not knowingly operate a service that collects children’s personal information through developer-controlled servers.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when Volumes’ features, data practices, or legal obligations change. The revised policy will display a new effective date and will be made available through the app and the public privacy-policy URL.
