Seven business processes that are good candidates for AI

Places to investigate, with a clear role for human judgement and a measurable result.

Start with a recurring task

Potential candidates include extracting fields from documents, sorting incoming requests, searching internal guidance, drafting customer replies, summarising case notes, classifying feedback and preparing first drafts of routine reports. Each is a candidate to test, not a guarantee that AI is suitable.

Define the human decision

For extraction, let a person verify uncertain fields. For customer replies, keep approval before sending. For search, require answers to point to accessible source material. Decide which mistakes are tolerable and which require a stop or escalation.

Test with representative examples

Use a small, appropriately authorised set of examples that includes messy documents, exceptions and missing information. Compare accuracy and total handling time against the current process, including the time people spend checking the output.

Keep simpler options on the table

A form, a rule or an integration may solve the problem more predictably. Consider AI where variation in language or documents makes rigid rules impractical, and only expand a pilot when its quality and review costs are understood.
